This week saw Broadfork owners officially aging out of Young Farmer status, which the USDA sets as under the age of 40. You all may remember the news that Dan aged out of this group a year and a half ago. Now it was Janet’s time to age out, and so we are now a farm run entirely by Old Farmers. Well, to be fair, the USDA doesn’t label Old Farmers, but if there’s a cut off for Young Farmers, then process of elimination leads one to a single conclusion.
Would you like a closer look at that cake? It was a Lemon-Rosemary Cake with violet flowers on top. Becoming an old farmer has all sorts of perks. (Note: we pride ourselves on our vegetables much more than on our cake-icing skills.)
The blow is softened by the wonderful planting and harvesting happening around here. We are quite happy to embrace Farming While Old if it comes with this bounty and nourishment.
Nothing is perfect, and if the mice keep eating the spinach and watermelon seeds out of the trays in the greenhouse we might go insane, but the greenhouse is full of plants, beds are getting prepped, seedlings are getting planted, and plants are growing. We’ll take it, and rest easy in the shade after the days’ work, as we figure any Old Farmer should do.
