It’s late on Friday and our backs are tired and this week has been very full, but we have such a delicious line up of veggies for you tomorrow that spending this time sending you e-notice is justified.
Last year at this time we were mourning the drowning of thousands of our plants. May 2018 rains overwhelmed the little babies. But this year is a different story!
This May (so far!), our crops are healthy (for the most part…there are exceptions of course…ugh) and our harvests are joyful.
The cucumbers this week all went to our more-than-amazing Farm Share members, but our on-farm Farm Stand and our booth at the Farmer’s Market @ St. Stephen’s will have the following delicious options for you…
Our Breads (more than last week!: Seed, Herb, Raisin, Rye, Baguette) / Romaine Lettuce — pictured below, and amazing / Red Lettuce Heads / Salad Mix / Arugula / Hearty Greens Mix / Spinach / Garlic Scapes — best ever and most fleeting crop, see pic below / Kale / Rainbow Chard / Beets / Radishes / Green Garlic / Cilantro / Mint / Dill / Radishes (at the farm only) / PLANTS: at St Stephen’s only in the a.m., then at the farm after 2 pm: Lettuce, Sweet Peppers, Black Cherry Tomatoes, Sungold Tomatoes, Italian Eggplant, Lemon Balm, Peppermint, Lavender, Thyme / plus Honey and Eggs at the farm only
Garlic Scapes, pictured above, are the tops of hard neck garlic plants and may need a sales pitch for you. Imagine that Garlic and Asparagus got married and had this magical little plant as their baby. (Hey – it’s Mother’s Day weekend! Let us run with family-themed analogies!) Crunchy with a similar texture to Asparagus but imparting a mild flavor of the garlic plant that it actually is, you should enjoy these with gusto. They are in season just 2 weeks out of each year. Any side-effect garlic breath is completely worth it. Load up, friends.
And – we have harvested such wonderful Romaine lettuces (pictured above) plus tender Red Leaf Lettuces that we may actually cry tomorrow if people don’t take them home to enjoy.
We have all these veggie beauties in our FarmStand at our farm, which is now staffed on Saturday mornings from 9-12, and open and self-serve from 9a-8p daily. Plus, we’ll bring these items on Saturday to the Farmer’s Market @ St. Stephen’s – which is outside in the parking lot from 8-12. Also keep an eye on what we have available via Richmond’s only online farmers’ market: FallLineFarms.com.
Enjoy ~
Janet, Dan, & the whole Broadfork crew
