It is almost May!

The month of May signals the off-with-a-bang start to our warm season here. Our Farm Share starts (hooray!!) and markets – including special events – really start rolling. We have special announcements here today about both:

First: You have two chances to see us at markets this weekend! We will be at the Farmers’ Market at St. Stephens on Saturday like usual from 9-12. We are outside in the parking lot and surrounded by wonderful peer vendors. On Sunday, we’ll be at the Spring Fling in Bon Air from 10-3. Hosted by the amazing folks at Perk! Coffee, the Spring Fling is a lovely community event with a great variety of vendors. The parking lot in front of the Buford Road Pharmacy will be full of talented artisans and makers of all sorts. See also their Instagram page for vendor highlights and event updates. At both events we’ll have vegetables to eat plus vegetables and herbs to plant, and also our breads like usual.

Pulling double duty on Sunday, we get to attend the Elby Awards Sunday evening. We are excited for a night out, and we’re delighted to be nominated for this award alongside such amazing peers. This is Janet typing here, early on Friday morning, and our kids have lots of ideas for how I should do my hair for this event. The list includes getting a perm, a nice bob cut, or a buzz cut. Stay tuned – who knows how this might pan out?! But if you’re a betting person, it might be wise to put money on the tried and true hairdo known as the farmer-bun.

Looking ahead to the main market season, we have a unexpected change which we announced on Facebook last week. Copied from there: With heavy hearts, we are announcing a change in our market schedule for 2019: We didn’t anticipate a staffing change this year that would prevent us from being able to staff two different Saturday markets, but that is the reality that we now have. Since we began our farm in 2011 we have vended at two markets each Saturday of the warm season, with the Brandermill Green Market always being one of those markets. Our other Saturday farmers’ market is The Farmers Market at St. Stephen’s , in the West End of Richmond. It is a year-round market (indoors in the winter!), and our business there has grown steadily through the years. The Brandermill market is so close to both our farm and Good Health Herbs (which serves as a pick up location for our Farm Shares as well as orders through the online farmers’ market Fall Line Farms & Local Roots ) that it only makes sense to back out of the Brandermill market, unless staffing logistics unexpectedly change for us.

We don’t have a van driver and full market staff, but we do have people to welcome you to our FarmStand on Saturday mornings!

Starting Saturday, May 4th we will be at our FarmStand, here on our farm, from 9-12 each Saturday, having a rollicking good time. It’s like a mini-market of all that we have to offer! One of us will be on hand to help you with your purchase, answer questions, and offer you a smiling thank you. We’ll have an assortment of our vegetables and breads (and flowers once they start blooming) here each Saturday. Sylvie will have her herbal salve available here. We can’t promise live music, but we’ll at least have some good tunes on the radio. The more people visit us here, the more of our harvest (and baking) we will make available here on Saturday mornings. Thank you for enjoying what we grow! You can even weigh in on Facebook where we’ve created an Event for this first kick-off Saturday.  Thank you for loving what we grow!

In other news, we are thrilled that so many of you joined our Farm Share for this season! Our Farm Share is now full, though we are likely to open up a few more spots toward the end of May. Email us if you’d like to get added to the Waiting List.

We’ll end with a recipe inspiration from our delicious week:

– Dan sauteed together our turnips and okra (frozen from last summer) along with tofu. He likely sauteed them with liquid aminos/coconut aminos. He served this on top of our salad greens, and then sprinkled our chopped scallions and cilantro on top of it all, plus some toasted sesame and sunflower seeds. Final garnish was pickled red onions. (We bought the red onions at the store and pickled them ourselves.) This was incredibly delicious.
Our harvest this week includes:
Hearty Greens Mix, Microgreens, Salad, Scallions, Sugar Snap Pea Shoots, Sweet Salad Turnips, plus
PLANTS for your garden: Kale – Lettuce – Arugula – Spinach – Chard – Cilantro – Dill – Thyme – Sage – Rosemary – Mojito Mint – Peppermint – Lemon Balm – Lavender – Tomatoes (slicers as well as Cherry Tomatoes) – Summer Squash – Cucumbers – Sweet Peppers – Eggplant – Basil)…and we’ll bake our Organic Hearth Baked Bread (Baguettes, Herb, Whole Rye, Raisin, & Seed loaves for this weekend).

{Our farmstand is open with most of the above items…see here for updated inventory}

Everything remaining after our farm stand is shopped (plus the bread we bake Saturday morning)… we’ll bring on Saturday to the Farmer’s Market @ St. Stephen’s – which is outside in the parking lot. Also keep an eye on what we have available via Richmond’s only online farmers’ market: FallLineFarms.com.

Enjoy ~

Janet, Dan, & the whole Broadfork crew
